Female CEO In A Man’s World

Well where do I start, when I started my property journey, I was 19. Being 19 and a female in a male dominated sector wasn’t easy, I will tell you that!

My company is now two years old and it is still no better, every time without fail people do not take me seriously and do not realise what I am capable of, until they give me a chance. I am the CEO and my partner Flynn is the company director. So basically, all of the final decisions are made by me.

Estate agents, Landlords, Investors, Contractors and tenants all immediately look to Flynn, shake his hand, give him eye contact, talk as though I am not there. Why? Big mistake there if you ask me.

So why does Flynn the male business partner who is the same age as me receive the respect that we both deserve?

Today, there are more women throughout the industry and at senior levels. However, there is still a gap between women joining the industry and being promoted within it, which needs to change. Property is an industry that is ideal for both men and women and it’s therefore a shame to see we are still represented relatively poorly at board level.

There is certainly more that needs to be done, however it’s great to see the industry as a whole moving forward. In the past, the network has been male dominated, but this mentality is slowly changing.

Going forward, the industry should focus their efforts on changing the perception that a career in property is off limits to women. Currently, there are some exceptional female role models managing large-scale property businesses and I feel that we must do more to promote these success stories and support their successors.
